Scope and Content Town House, High Street, Strathmiglo, Fife, from east-north-east This view from the east-north-east, taken in 1979, shows the steeple of the Town House, which was an addition of 1734 to a building acquired some time earlier as a town house. The steeple was probably built for a town clock and bell. Note that the walls of the tower slope slightly inwards, giving an illusion of height. The steeple bears the arms and name of the Honourable Margaret Balfour of Burleigh, the feudal superior of the village. Strathmiglo is now primarily a centre for the surrounding rural area, and the building which was the Town House proper is now a private house. Strathmiglo developed after about 1600, and became a hand-loom linen-weaving village in the 18th century. A power-loom factory was later built. The village also had a linen thread mill, a bleach works, and a beetling mill in the later 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
