Scope and Content High Street, Pittenweem, Fife, from west-south-west This view from the west-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the east end of the High Street. On the left is the Kelly Lodging, built in the 16th century for the Earls of Kellie, and restored in 1969. At the end is the Tolbooth tower of about 1588, attached to the parish church. The top of the tower is early 17th century. Pittenweem is now the only significant fishing port in Fife, though it is not as busy as it once was. Several of the houses by the harbour and in the High Street were brought up to modern standards under The National Trust for Scotland's 'Little Houses' scheme. Pittenweem was established as a burgh by the canons of the Augustinian Priory in the town, and was made a royal burgh in 1541. It was a port of some significance, and also developed a significant fishing industry. From the late 19th century it also became a holiday resort. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
