Scope and Content Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, Harris, Western Isles, from south This is the main front of Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, designed in a Scots Baronial style by David Bryce (1803-76) and built between 1864 and 1867. To the left is the four-storeyed tower which has a single turret to the right projecting from the crenellated parapet. On the first floor, to the right of the arched entrance door (left) is an oriel window, with another corbelled out from the right-hand wing. The other parts of the asymmetrical castle are three storeys in height. Some parts of the main front are advanced and others are recessed. Different types of windows have been used on different floors of the building. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Amhuinnsuidhe is situated on the west coast of Harris, towards the north end of the island. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
