Scope and Content Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, Harris, Western Isles, from south-west Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, which dates to 1864-7, is built in a Scots Baronial style and is faced at the front with imported stone. It consists of a three-storeyed main block with a four-storeyed tower. There is a string-course between the ground and first floor. In the foreground is the sea wall which is constructed from diagonally set blocks below a crenellated parapet. The main road passes between the castle and the sea wall. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Amhuinnsuidhe is situated on the west coast of Harris, towards the north end of the island. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
