Scope and Content Coroghon Barn, Canna, Highland, from north-west This is the west gable of Coroghan Barn which dates to the late 18th century. The two-storeyed building is rectangular in shape and built from rubble, with rubble dressings. The roof is made of slate, and there is a stone forestair leading to the door on the west side. Coroghon Barn was built for Hector MacNeill who rented part of Canna from John MacDonald of Clanranald in 1781. MacNeill made other improvements on the island such as building Coroghon House, the 'Changehouse' and barn, and a water mill. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
