Scope and Content Aerial view of Roman Catholic Church, Sanday, and harbour on Canna, Highland To the left in this view is the island of Sanday, on which the Roman Catholic Church is situated. Now deconsecrated, the church dates to 1886-90. It was designed by William Frame and funded by the Marchioness of Bute in memory of her father, Lord Howard of Glossop. Opposite the church, on the island of Canna, is the harbour which was built in 1892. Thanks to the harbour, Canna developed as a herring curing station and was used by fishermen from Barra until 1914. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
