Scope and Content Port of Ness Harbour, Lewis, Western Isles, from north-north-east Ness, which was also known as Cealagmhol, is situated on the north-east coast of Lewis. It was surveyed in 1828 and the estimate given for a pier there was £250. The pier was built in 1835 but cost £1,645. The Herring Fishery Board paid £1,096.13.4, and Mr Mackenzie paid the remainder. A total of 30 fishing boats began to use the pier as soon as it was finished. The sea wall and main pier are to the left in this view, with a short pier jutting out to the right. On the pier there is a tractor with a link-box, for carrying small items. The entrance to the harbour is to the left, and in the harbour basin also to the left there is a breakwater which was added in 1894. The harbour was extended to the east in 1893. In 1824, the island of Lewis, apart from the parish of Stornoway, was bought by a Mr Stewart Mackenzie who decided to make money by concentrating on developing sheep farming and fishing. He decided that unless piers were built it would be difficult to make a success of the fishing industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
