Description View of uncompleted house in pier area from W Digital image of B 76346

Date 8/1992

Catalogue Number SC 794063

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 76346

Scope and Content Pier area, Leverburgh, Harris, Western Isles, from west This incomplete house may be one of 'the eleven pairs of excellent houses under erection (on which work has been stopped) for Managers and Foremen'. These details were given in the sales particulars for 'The Port of Leverburgh' when it was put up for sale after Lord Leverhulme's death in 1925. The incomplete houses were 'built either of stone or concrete blocks with asbestos composition and slated roofs'. This one is almost two storeys in height, and has two doorway openings visible. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Leverburgh, once known as Obbe, is at the south-west tip of Harris. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
