Scope and Content Bay area, Leverburgh, Harris, Western Isles, from west Leverburgh possessed a natural harbour, known as the 'Hope'. ('Hop' is the Old Norse for tidal bay.) In 1920 the area was developed as a commercial fishery by Lord Leverhulme (1851-1925), the owner of Harris, who felt that there was no future in farming on the island. For several years the fishery was a success, but Lord Leverhulme died in 1925 and the fishery was sold to a demolition company, causing many people, who had moved to Leverburgh on account of the work, to become unemployed. Today, however, fishing provides the most employment in the area. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Leverburgh, once known as Obbe, is at the south-west tip of Harris. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
