Scope and Content St Kilda, Western Isles This elevated view of St Kilda covers the area of the village and Village Bay. The village is situated on low-lying ground, and is protected from the worst of the wind by the hills and the island of Dun, seen in the distance opposite the village. Towards the left end of the village is a small pier, which was built in 1901. Around the area is a wall known as the 'head dyke'. Inside the head dyke is the village street. Behind the line of houses in the street there is a circular enclosure which is the burial-ground. Outwith the area enclosed by the head dyke there are little buildings known as 'cleits', and various enclosures. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
