Scope and Content Detail of enclosure, An Lag Bho'n Tuath, St Kilda, Western Isles This is a detail of one of the four drystone enclosures situated at An Bho'n Tuath. There are large stones which have been set upright at the base of the wall. These types of stones are known as orthostatic. Smaller stones have been used for the rest of the wall. The purpose of the enclosures is as yet unknown. They may date to the 1830s, and it is likely the enclosures were used for the growing of vegetables, and the walls kept out the sheep and cows. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
