Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 793962

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sailor's Walk, No 443 High Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows what was originally a pair of late 16th-century houses, immediately adjacent to Kirkcaldy Harbour. They were restored in 1954-9 by Wheeler & Sproson for The National Trust for Scotland. These buildings had, until the 1930s at least, a row of two-storeyed cottages adjacent to the south. These had forestairs, and a great deal of character. Their loss has been very unfortunate. The buildings in this view are now occupied as offices. The large town of Kirkcaldy has a long and complex history. It is nicknamed the 'Lang Toun' as it is strung out along the shore of the Forth Estuary, rather than having a compact focus. It was a burgh of regality under Dunfermline Abbey by c.1320, and became a royal burgh formally in 1644. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
