Scope and Content Lodge, Lews Castle, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles This is one of the gateways leading to Lews Castle. Built of rubble with ashlar dressings, it was probably designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63), the architect from Glasgow who designed Lews Castle for Sir James Matheson (1796-1878), owner of Lewis from 1844 onwards. The castle was built between 1848 and 1860. The square gateway, which incorporates a lodge, is buttressed at the front and has a pointed-arched pend, through which vehicles would have passed. Above the pend there is a parapet, with two chimneys. On either side of the pend there is a single-storeyed crenellated building. architectural fragments Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles.
