Scope and Content Lodge, Lews Castle, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles This is one of the gateways leading to Lews Castle. Lews Castle was designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63) for Sir James Matheson (1796-1878) who had bought Lewis in 1844. The castle was built between 1848 and 1860. It is likely this gateway and lodges were also designed by Wilson. The gateway is built of rubble, with ashlar dressings. The square gateway has buttresses at the front, and a pointed arch pend, through which carriages would have driven on their way to the castle. There are two gates in a yett style. On either side of the gateway there is a single-storeyed, single-bayed lodge with a parapet. architectural fragments Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles.
