Scope and Content Service Court, Lews Castle, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles This simple entrance to the service court at Lews Castle consists of an arched opening into which a wooden gate has been fitted at a later date. Above the archway the wall is crenellated to mirror the style of the castle itself. Lews Castle was begun in 1848 for Sir James Matheson, owner of Lewis from 1844 onwards. Matheson, who came from Sutherland originally, had made his money in the opium trade in the Far East, returning to Britain in 1842. The castle was built on the site of Seaforth Lodge, which had been the home of the Mackenzies who had come into possession of Lewis in 1610. Some architectural fragments from the lodge were incorporated into Lews Castle. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
