Scope and Content Aerial view of Kirkwall, Orkney Islands This is an aerial view of Kirkwall from the west. To the left is Kirkwall Bay, and the harbour, and divided by a narrow strip of land from Kirkwall Bay is the Peedie, or Peerie, Sea. In the centre of the town, surrounded by trees, is the 12th-century St Magnus Cathedral. In the centre of Kirkwall there are many buildings which date to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Many houses have their gables facing the street. On the outskirts of Kirkwall there are many modern dwellings, as Kirkwall expanded during the 20th century. Orkney, which lies about 9 km north of Scotland, consists of a group of around 70 islands, 20 of which are inhabited. The biggest island is known as Mainland. Three-quarters of the population of the islands live on Mainland and it is also where the two towns, Kirkwall and Stromness, are situated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
