Scope and Content Rousay Mill, Rousay, Orkney Islands The three-storeyed Rousay Mill dates to the 19th century and is rubble-built. The kiln vent can be seen on the apex of the roof. The grain was dried in the kiln before being ground, as it made it easier to grind and better meal was produced. The stones which ground the grain were powered by a wood and iron eight-spoke wheel. The water fell onto the wheel and pushed it around (overshot) rather than pushing the wheel round from underneath (undershot). The water which turned the wheel was channelled along the top of a drystone embankment (lade). Rousay is an island which is situated to the north of the Mainland of Orkney. It is approximately 9.5 km wide and almost circular in shape. The fertile land is situated around the coast and the centre of the island is hilly, with heather-covered moorland.
