Scope and Content Town House, Sandhaven, Culross, Fife, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows, to the right, the Town House, the body of which was built in 1626. It has painted ceilings on the first floor. The tower and slated spire were added in 1783. To the left are houses rehabilitated by The National Trust for Scotland. The burgh declined from the mid-18th century, but many of its buildings remained intact, if neglected. In 1932 The National Trust for Scotland purchased some of the properties, and began a programme of refurbishment, using Ian G Lindsay & Partners as the architects. The burgh of Culross was one of Scotland's first industrial towns, Coal appears to have been mined here from an early date, and from 1575 it was worked on a large scale by George Bruce. In 1592 the town became a royal burgh, with the exclusive right to make iron girdles, used for baking oatcakes and pancakes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
