Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 55-6 The Shore, Edinburgh, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, shows one of the two arched openings on the ground floor of the building. These may originally have been cart entries, but the conversion to shop fronts, as seen here, may well date from the 1820s or 1830s. This warehouse was, when it was built, just across the road from a wharf accessible to sea-going vessels of a size capable of long voyages. It is likely that it was a wine and spirit warehouse. It was rehabilitated in 1979-80, and the space behind the arches seen here converted into a wine bar and restaurant. This warehouse was probably built in the late 18th or early 19th century, and is most unusual in the delicacy of its architectural detailing. Though many of the latterly-surviving warehouses in the area were of a vernacular character, this one was almost certainly designed by a recognised architect. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
