Scope and Content Hall of residence, Nos 13-16 Ramsay Garden, Edinburgh, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the west end of the complex, designed by W Henbest Capper, architect, in an explicit, rather self-conscious, Scots Baronial style. This is the most public face of the complex, overlooking the approach to the Castle esplanade. The rest of the complex, including the adaptation of the 18th-century buildings, was undertaken by Sydney Mitchell, in an almost English 'Arts and Crafts' style. The whole thing is pleasing, if a little incongruous at the top of the Royal Mile. No longer a hall of residence, it now houses very desirable private houses. This tenement was planned as a 'Town and Gown' hall of residence by Patrick Geddes, pioneer of modern town planning. It incorporates two existing Old Town buildings, Ramsay Lodge, designed for his own use by Allan Ramsay the poet in about 1740, and an 18th-century terrace. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
