Description Aerial view from Sir Walter Scott Monument from SE showing SSE and ENE fronts of Jenners' with part of SSE front of hotel to left

Date 1979

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 792536

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Jenners, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken from the Scott Monument, was taken in 1979, and shows the original building of 1893-5 in the centre, with its elaborate carved decoration. On the left is an extension built in 1966, and to the rear one of 1903. This was one of the largest department stores in Britain when it was first completed. The 1890s building is constructed with steel beams, cast iron columns, and concrete floors. There is a galleried saloon in the centre of the block. The pre-1914 blocks were extensively repaired in the 1990s. This building was constructed in 1893-5 as a department store for Charles Jenner, to designs by W Hamilton Beattie, who also designed the North British (now Balmoral) Hotel. It replaced an earlier store, converted from houses, which was destroyed by fire in 1892. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
