Scope and Content Croft-an-Righ House, Nos 28-30 Croft-an-Righ, Edinburgh, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the building, with its corner turret, a typical late 16th- and early 17th-century feature. The exposed rubble was not meant to be seen, and would originally have been covered with lime harling. This building was reconditioned in the early 20th century by H M Office of Works, and divided into flats for use by some of the gardeners working in the gardens of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. In the 1990s it was converted to house offices for Historic Scotland staff. Croft-an-Righ means 'the field of the king'. This building was probably built in the early 17th century, and extended to an L-plan in the late 17th century. The building may have been the one owned by the Earl of Airth, William Graham, which was damaged by fire in about 1680. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
