Scope and Content Canongate Tolbooth, No 163 Canongate, Edinburgh, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the Canongate Tolbooth in the centre. The tower was built in 1591, and the courtroom block built at the same time or soon after. The courthouse block was restored in 1875 by Robert Morham, and the clock was added in 1884. Robert Morham's restoration of the courtroom was very thorough, and little of the original is left. He provided a new roof and a parapet, and converted the first floor and attic into a single space. This is now a museum, part of the Edinburgh City Museums. The burgh of Canongate was established in 1140 by the canons of Holyrood Abbey, with the authority of King David I. After the Reformation, the feudal superior became the lay commendators of the abbey, and from 1636 the burgh of Edinburgh, with which it was amalgamated in 1856. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
