Scope and Content Town House, Nos 1-3 High Street, North Berwick, East Lothian, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the Town House, which was built in 1723-4, replacing an earlier tolbooth, probably on the same site. The roof and clock-tower were rebuilt in 1967 by T E Inglis. In front of the building is a 'provost's lamp', placed here after the town ceased to be a burgh in 1975. This building had a council chamber on the first floor, with a room for the imprisonment of debtors at one end. On the floor below was a prison room. The ground floor was adapted for use as shops in 1985. The town council of North Berwick was absorbed into East Lothian District at local government reorganisation in 1975. North Berwick was the port for a large part of the grain-growing area of East Lothian, and, judging by the scale of the harbourside granaries, had an extensive trade in the early 19th century. In the mid- and late 19th century it became a popular holiday destination and commuter town. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
