Scope and Content Dollar Academy, Clackmannan, from west This view from the west, taken in 1979, shows the original school building, in the then fashionable Neo-Classical style, built in 1819-20 to designs by William Playfair of Edinburgh. It was co-educational from the start. The Classical treatment symbolised civilisation, order and rationality. The main building was badly damaged by fire in the 1970s but was speedily restored. There are now several modern buildings in the grounds of this building. The academy is now an independent fee-paying school. Dollar is now a dormitory town, its industries having long gone. The town of Dollar was a small place until the 18th century when textile manufacture and finishing became significant industries. Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 under the will of John McNab, a local boy who had moved to London and become a successful shipowner. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
