Scope and Content Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire, from north-north-east This view from the north-north-east, taken in 1979, shows the building after it had been re-harled in the 1970s. Note the corbelling out of projections which house spiral stairs, and the band of ornamental corbelling towards the top of the building. The top storey is the most elaborate of any tower-house in Scotland. The building has since 1963 been in the ownership of The National Trust for Scotland. It is internally little changed since it was completed in the 1620s, and has splendid plastering in its Great Hall. William Forbes was one of the most successful of the many younger sons of landed families who became merchants. This is one of the best-known buildings in Scotland. Its construction was begun in the early 17th century by the Mortimer family, and the incomplete building was purchased by William Forbes, a Baltic merchant, and completed by 1626. The Forbes work was designed by one of the Bell family of master masons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
