Scope and Content Kingston Bridge, Glasgow, from north-north-west This view from the north-north-west, taken in 1979, shows the bridge from Anderston Quay. The gap between the two spans can be seen. The reinforced concrete spandrels are faced with exposed aggregate concrete panels in a manner typical of the 1960s, when the bridge was designed. The main spans were constructed as balanced cantilevers to avoid obstructing the river. The bridge is now carrying heavier traffic than was originally envisaged. A major programme of maintenance has been in progress since the late 1990s. This bridge was built as part of the M8 urban motorway round the north and west sides of the city centre. It is in fact two pre-stressed reinforced concrete boxes, side by side. It was designed by WA Fairhurst & Partners, and opened in 1970. There are long approach viaducts on both sides.
