Scope and Content Iron ore terminal, General Terminus Quay, Glasgow, from west-north-west This view from the west-north-west, taken in 1979, shows the ore terminal from Mavisbank Quay, which was rebuilt by the Clyde Navigation Trust during the 1920s after the failure of an earlier quay. The cranes are for unloading ore using grabs. The ships on the left have delivered ore to the terminal. By 1979 it had become uneconomic to import ore in vessels of the size that could be handled at General Terminus. A new deep-water ore-importing facility had been completed at Hunterston, and replaced the plant at General Terminus, which was subsequently demolished. General Terminus Quay was built in the 1840s as the first part of Glasgow Harbour served by a mainline railway. It was designed for coal traffic, both for bunkering steamships, and for coastal shipment and export. In 1957 it was equipped for importing iron ore in bulk for use at Ravenscraig and Clyde Iron Works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
