Scope and Content Ferry at Railway Quay, Oban, Argyll & Bute, from west-south-west This view from the west-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the Railway Quay with the MV 'Caledonia', on the car ferry service between Oban and Craignure, Mull. This vessel, built in 1966, was placed on this service in 1976, On the right is the stern of the small ferry 'Morvern', built in 1973, at the South Pier. The replacement of conventional vessels by car ferries on West Highland services began in the early 1960s. Since then the vehicle traffic has increased dramatically, and the size of vessels has increased accordingly. This has required the berths at the Railway Pier to be extended. This pier was opened in 1880 by the Callander & Oban Railway next to its station, to allow direct interchange of passengers between rail and steamer. In the early 1960s the pier was adapted to handle car ferries to Mull, Coll, Colonsay and Tiree. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
