Scope and Content Queen Street Station, West George Street, Glasgow This view taken from the south in 1979 shows a train for Edinburgh. This is one of a number introduced in 1971 with a class 27 diesel-electric locomotive at each end, worked push-pull, that is, with one driver at the front end. The power available allowed a faster service to be run. The station was rebuilt in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with the former goods station becoming a car park. The platforms were shortened, allowing for a larger concourse. Since 1966 the station has handled services which until then used Buchanan Street Station. The first railway station on this site was opened in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway. It was rebuilt and extended in the late 1870s by the North British Railway, which had taken over the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
