Scope and Content Slipway and engine house, Balloch Pier, Drumkinnon Bay, West Dunbartonshire This shows the slip from the north, with the eastern and central rails in the foreground. Note that the central rails has ratchet teen inset, to prevent the carriage accidentally running down the slip. The carriage can be seen part-way up the slip, and the winch house is in the distance. The steamer service from this pier was withdrawn in the early 1970s, and this slip has not been used since. The last paddle steamer on the loch, the 'Maid of the Loch', has survived, and is being restored, and it is intended to bring the slip back into use to slip this vessel. This patent slip was constructed in 1896 by the Dumbarton & Balloch Joint Line Committee for the overhaul of the Committee's paddle steamers operating on Loch Lomond. It has a carriage for supporting the hull of the vessel being slipped, running on three rails, which is hauled by a large steam winch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
