Scope and Content Aerial view of the Tay Works, No 2 Lochee Road, Dundee The Calender Works, part of the Tay Works, are situated in North Tay Street. This is where glaze was applied to the woven jute. Jute, a plant fibre imported originally from Bengal, was spun and woven into a cheap, coarse cloth used in sacking and for the backing of carpets and linoleum. In Great Britain most of the spinning and weaving of jute took place in Dundee, and as late as 1911 almost half of Dundee's working population was employed in the textile trade. However, cheaper production costs in other countries, such as India, led to a decline in Dundee's dominance, and by the 1990s there were only four working jute mills in the city. This aerial view of Dundee demonstrates the importance of the textile trade in Dundee's industrial history. The Tay Works, which were originally used for jute spinning and weaving, can be seen towards the middle, and are very distinctive because of their length. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
