Scope and Content Interior at the Tay Works, No 2 Lochee Road, Dundee In 1851 the Gilroy brothers had a new four-storeyed plus attic mill built to the north of the old mills. This is a detail of one of the floors. The columns which support the roof are made of cast iron. On the walls at either side there are cut-outs where there would once have been machinery. The mill was where jute was prepared and spun. Good lighting was very important for the production of good-quality yarn, hence the large number of windows on opposite walls. The jute yarn, once spun, was woven into coarse cloth which was ideal for sacking, and jute was later also used in the production of carpets and linoleum. From the late 19th century onwards the Gilroys included jute-backed carpet manufacture as a part of their business. The Tay Works in Lochee Road, Dundee, began as a business in 1849 when the Gilroy Brothers bought several mills from a bankrupt flax spinner. The works was extended further with the building of other mills and factories between 1851 and 1881. By 1877 Gilroy Sons & Co was the second biggest jute manufacturer in the world. By the 1970s the jute industry had declined, and in 1986 much of the Tay Works was converted into student residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
