Scope and Content Tram depot and power station, Henderson Row, Edinburgh This shows the building from the north-west. The two-storeyed section and the single-storeyed block to its left are the 1888 buildings, and the rest the 1900 extension. The cable tram tracks ran to the left, turning into Pitt Street, which was on the main route. This complex remained in use until the electrification of the city's tramways in 1922. In 1937 it was occupied by the Brandon Motor Co, and in 1971 was a police garage. Most of it was demolished in the 1980s, retaining the two-storeyed frontage of the 1888 block, now incorporated into a new office block. This complex was built in 1888 for the Edinburgh Northern Tramways Co, which constructed the city's first cable tram route. It housed the single-deck cars that operated the service, and the steam engine which drove the cable. It was extended in 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
