Scope and Content Silvermills Laundry and carpet cleaning works, East Silvermills Lane, Edinburgh This shows a building on the east side of West Silvermills Lane, looking east, which was, in 1952, part of the Silvermills Laundry and the works of the Scottish Carpet & Tapestry Cleaning Co Ltd. It was apparently of early 19th-century date, and must have had earlier uses. Carpet cleaning was an important business when loose, rather than fitted, carpets were used in most homes and offices, and when coal fires, with their attendant ash and soot, were normal. This business was well situated on the northern edge of Edinburgh's New Town. The part of Edinburgh known as Silvermills was until the 1980s a network of lanes, lined by buildings dating from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. These buildings had a number of uses, some difficult to trace, as the Edinburgh Post Office Directories do not include street numbers for industrial buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
