Scope and Content Castle Leather Works and Silvermills Laundry and carpet cleaning works, East Silvermills Lane, Edinburgh This shows a lane off the east side of West Silvermills Lane, looking east towards Henderson Place. The building on the left was the Castle Leather Works of John Cameron & Sons (Curriers) Ltd, and the one on the right was in 1945 part of the Scottish Carpet & Tapestry Cleaning Co Ltd. In 1971 these buildings were occupied by the firm of William Allan Smith & Co Ltd, who advertised themselves in 1945 as dealing in 'Everything Electrical'. At that time they were in Iona Street. The part of Edinburgh known as Silvermills was until the 1980s a network of lanes, lined by buildings dating from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. These buildings had a number of uses, difficult to trace, as the Edinburgh Post Office Directories do not include street numbers for industrial buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
