Scope and Content Castle Leather Works, East Silvermills Lane, Edinburgh This shows part of East Silvermills Lane, looking north. The building in the centre was in 1945 the Castle Leather Works of John Cameron & Sons (Curriers) Ltd. It was probably built in the late 19th century. In 1971 it was occupied by William Allan Smith & Co Ltd, electrical engineers. The firm of John Cameron & Sons (Curriers) Ltd were motor body, furniture, and harness leather manufacturers, and curriers, lapanners and enamellers in 1945, and were still there in 1952. The part of Edinburgh known as Silvermills was until the 1980s a network of lanes, lined by buildings dating from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. These buildings had a number of uses, some difficult to trace, as the Edinburgh Post Office Directories do not include street numbers for industrial buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
