Scope and Content Printing and bookbinding works (Furniture Works), No 30 Fettes Row, Edinburgh This shows the works from the south-east. This frontage is built of wood, and probably dates from the early 20th century. In 1971 it was occupied by Martin's of George Street, as their contract furnishing department. On the right is part of Orr's Carpet Beating & Cleaning Works. The buildings on this section of Fettes Row were perched on a slope above the Silvermills area, hence the timber construction of No 30. All of these buildings were demolished in the 1980s and replaced by an office block. This works belonged in 1937 to The Ludgate Company, makers of loose-leaf books. These were at that time used largely in offices for ledgers, accounts and minute books, and were substantial items, with heavy covers, often covered with imitation leather.
