Scope and Content Queen Street Station, West George Street, Glasgow This shows the north end of the station, with the bridge carrying Cathedral Street over the station. This was built during the 1870s rebuilding, by Smith & Naysmith. The train on the left is a typical Edinburgh express of the period, and the one on the right is on a trial run of a new high-speed service to Edinburgh. The train on trial in this view had a diesel locomotive at each end to give enough power for the high-speed service. The trials proved successful, and the operation continued for several years. The bridge in this view now has a weight limit imposed on it. The first station on this site was opened in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway. It was rebuilt on a larger scale by the North British Railway in the late 1870s, to handle increased traffic, and again by British Railways in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
