Scope and Content Photographic copy of drawings of Sydney Mitchell's plans for Crichton Memorial Church, Crichton Royal Hospital, Glencaple Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This large, richly detailed, cathedral-type church is cruciform in plan, and was designed in a Gothic style based mainly on late 13th-century sources. It has a seven-bayed nave (right), transepts (centre), and a square tower built over the crossing. The two-bayed choir (left) has a semi-octagonal sanctuary. A mortuary chapel was built below the nave, and a five-bayed porch (right) attached to its west end. Arthur George Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930) set up practice in Edinburgh in 1882. In 1887 his assistant, George Wilson (1845-1912), joined him as partner, and between then and 1911, they designed a wide range of buildings including more than a dozen churches as well as town and country houses. His hospital buildings included (apart from those at Crichton Royal) the Roxburgh District Asylum, the Opthalmological Pavilion in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Edinburgh. He worked in a range of styles, but was always imaginative and expansive. Crichton Memorial Church, designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was built in 1890-7 during a major period of development of the Crichton Royal Hospital (then the Crichton Royal Asylum for Lunatics) site. It stands at the heart of the complex of buildings, and is unquestionably the finest building within the grounds. It was designed to be used by all denominations and all classes of patients, and was built as a memorial to the asylum's founder and to celebrate the institution's 50th anniversary.
