Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the quay from the west. The two nearer rail-mounted electric cranes were built by Alex Chaplin & Co Ltd, of Govan, Glasgow, The third, by Morgan of Kilwinning, has its jib down, and the crane in the distance, with its jib up, is one mounted on caterpillar tracks, made by Smith Rodley. This wharf remained in use until the 1980s, and was improved in the 1990s by Irvine Development Corporation, who repaired the wharf as part of an extensive programme of harbourside improvements, and refurbished the Morgan crane. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
