Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the middle one of the three rail-mounted electric cranes on the quay, from the south-west. This one was built by Alex Chaplin & Co Ltd, with works in Helen Street, Govan, Glasgow, and was one of two by that maker on the quay. This wharf remained in use until the 1980s, and was improved in the 1990s by Irvine Development Corporation, who repaired the wharf as part of an extensive programme of harbourside improvements. One of the Chaplin cranes is in store in the Scottish Maritime Museum. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
