Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the timber quay from the west, with the tug 'Garnock' and a launch. The tug belongs to Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. In the 1920s the quay was used for laying up and refitting Clyde excursion steamers, and may have been built for that purpose. This wharf remained in use until the 1980s, and was improved in the 1990s by Irvine Development Corporation, who repaired the wharf as part of an extensive programme of harbourside improvements. The tug, damaged in an explosion, is now part of the Scottish Maritime Museum's collection. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
