Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the upper part of the harbour from the west, with an old landing-stage on the right. The quays beyond it were used by small craft, especially fishing vessels. The site of the Ayrshire Dockyard Co's shipbuilding yard is on the left, in the distance. This area was improved in the late 1980s by Irvine Development Corporation, who demolished the landing stage, dredged the channel, and installed pontoons for the display of vessels belonging to the Scottish Maritime Museum. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
