Scope and Content Shotts Iron Works, Burnbrae Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire This shows the charging platform for the two cupolas in the iron foundry. The wall on the left is a retaining wall. Note the piles of scrap on the left and of coke on the right, ready to be charged into the cupolas. The original gable of the foundry, on the right, has been heightened in brick. This foundry was rebuilt to make castings for equipment used in the pits in the area, which it was still doing on a limited scale in 1971. The National Coal Board closed these works in the late 1970s, and most of the complex has been demolished. This works was founded in 1802 by the Shotts Iron Co, and continued to smelt iron until 1947, when the coal industry was nationalised. It had always had a foundry and engineering works, and these were retained by the National Coal Board. They were still operating on a limited scale in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
