Scope and Content Shotts Iron Works, Burnbrae Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire This shows the charging platform for the two cupolas in the iron foundry, situated behind a wall which was part of an older building, possibly dating back to the 1830s. Note that the right-hand cupola has a brick top, a 19th-century feature. This foundry was rebuilt to make castings for equipment used in the pits in the area, which it was still doing on a limited scale in 1971. The National Coal Board closed these works in the late 1970s, and these cupolas have been demolished. This works was founded in 1802 by the Shotts Iron Co, and continued to smelt iron until 1947, when the coal industry was nationalised. It had always had a foundry and engineering works, and these were retained by the National Coal Board. They were still operating on a limited scale in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
