Scope and Content Shotts Iron Works, Burnbrae Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire This shows the north-east end of the iron foundry. This masonry wall is part of an older building, possibly dating back to the 1830s. Behind the arches are the two large cupolas used to melt the iron used in the foundry, an early, and, by 1971, unique arrangement. This foundry was rebuilt to make castings for equipment used in the pits in the area, which it was still doing on a limited scale in 1971. The National Coal Board closed these works in the late 1970s, and this building has been demolished. This works was founded in 1802 by the Shotts Iron Co, and continued to smelt iron until 1947, when the coal industry was nationalised. It had always had a foundry and engineering works, and these were retained by the National Coal Board. They were still operating on a limited scale in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
