Scope and Content Newmill Woollen Mill, Elgin, Moray This shows the north gable of the spinning mill, with its clock- and water-tower. The water was probably stored to provide water under pressure for a sprinkler system of fire control. To the right is the boiler house with its chimney. The stylish but idiosyncratic design of this building was typical of this complex. This works is still in operation, and is one of the last woollen mills in north-east Scotland. It still produces woollen goods of the highest quality, both of design and of manufacture. The firm's foundry was in 1971 a separate business; its current status is not known. This concern was founded in 1797 by Alexander Johnston, and is still owned by the Johnston family. It was in 1971 an integrated mill, both spinning and weaving high quality woollen goods in a complex of buildings of various dates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
