Scope and Content Victoria Bridge, Mar Lodge, Aberdeenshire, from south-south-west This shows the three-span lattice girder bridge over the River Dee which was built in 1905 and replaced an 1848 bridge. The two piers and the round-ended cutwaters are constructed with stone given a rock-faced finish (bull-faced stone). The piers on the right support an overthrow or horseshoe arch inscribed 'Edward VII 1905' and 'Queen Victoria 1848', dates commemorating the building of the first and second bridges. The ornamental cast-iron handrail which runs the length of the structure was originally on the 1848 bridge. Victoria Bridge is at the main south entrance to the estate and would have been used by delivery wagons and family carriages. The road on the north side of the bridge forks into two sections and leads either to the front of the lodge or the stable block and service courtyard. Only family carriages would be allowed to use the road in front of the house. William Duff of Dipple who became the 1st Earl of Fife in 1759 built the original Mar Lodge (or Dalmore House) in 1750. The 6th Earl was created the 1st Duke of Fife when he married Princess Louise, who was a daughter of King Edward VII. When Mar Lodge was destroyed by fire in 1895, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie (1848-1933) designed a new lodge and Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone later in the same year. The duke and duchess used the house mainly as a sporting lodge and an autumn home. The building had another serious fire in 1991 but was subsequently restored. The 29,380-hectare estate had several owners from 1959 until 1995 when The National Trust for Scotland bought it, with the help of a £10 million lottery grant.
