Copy of SGF 1950/16/2/6

Scope and Content Photographic copy of presentation drawing showing elevations, Area C, Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development Area (CDA), Glasgow This drawing shows part of the north elevation (left), and section through the double-height 'garden' balconies (centre), and section through the maisonettes (centre right) and the east elevation (right)) showing the balconies on the ends of the block. The design also shows plants on the balconies which soften the harsh lines of the concrete slabs, and the decorative cast panels at basement level. These multi-storeyed blocks were seen as the answer to Glasgow's housing problems during the 1950s and 1960s, as 19th-century slums were cleared away to be replaced by many of these 'streets in the air'. New pitched roofs were added to the flats in 1987, but they continued to be prey to vandalism, and were demolished in 1993. Hutchesontown-Gorbals Area C was designed by architects Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson, approved for construction in 1960, and built 1962-6. The development around Queen Elizabeth Square included two 20-storeyed slab blocks on curving concrete supports which were demolished in 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
